Los Angeles, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers men's water polo team upset No. 6 Pepperdine, 9-8, in the first consolation game for both teams at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, on Saturday, Nov. 26. The win moved the Tigers to 19-13 on the season.
Trailing 3-1 after one period, Pacific battled back with two goals to open the second period to tie the game at 3-3. The two teams traded goals to make it a 4-4 game, but Pepperdine scored the final goal of the half to take a 5-4 into the break.
The Waves maintained their one goal advantage into the final period as Pacific trailed 6-5 entering the fourth period.
The Tigers scored back-to-back goals to open the period to take their first lead of the game at 7-6. Both teams continued to take advantage on offense as the game was tied, 8-8 with under one minute to play.
In the final minute, Pacific junior Matt Turnbull (Act, Australia) notched his second goal of the game to lift Pacific to the 9-8 victory. Sophomore Dragan Bakic (Split, Croatia) led the Tigers with three goals, three assists and five drawn ejections.
The Tigers conclude their season tomorrow in the fifth-place game against No. 4 UCLA at 11:30 a.m.
