Berkeley, Calif.- The No. 11 ranked Pacific men's water polo fell on Saturday, October 4th, to the No. 5 ranked California Golden Bears, 16-4. With the win the Bears advanced to 7-3 overall, while the Tigers fell to 8-7.
The Tigers entered Saturday's contest with their highest national ranking of the year, and coming off a restful bye week. Pacific did battle with the Golden Bears, who were coming off three straight losses for the first time since 2004.
The first quarter started off strong for the Tigers as senior William Milcovich (Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored the first goal of the game with 6:24 remaining in the period. California then rattled off three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead, but once again Pacific answered back.
Milcovich again brought the Tigers back with his second goal of the contest with 4:24 left to play. California scored two more before the clock ran out and the period ended with the Tigers trailing 5-2.
The next few quarters proved to be a challenge for Pacific, as the Bears' offense overpowered the Tigers defense. California outscored Pacific 7-1 in the second and third quarters to build a 12-3 lead.
The fourth quarter remained troublesome for the Tigers as they fell behind early. The Bears' offense continued to push, and outscored Pacific 4-1 in period, to close out the game 16-4.
Pacific was led by Milcovich's two goals, while sophomore Austin Delong (Houston, Texas) and freshman Tyler Reardon (Oak Park, Calif.) each added one goal as well.
