Santa Barbara, Calif. - No. 9 UC Santa Barbara defeated No. 13 Pacific, 11-8. With the loss Pacific falls to 12-13 (0-6 MPSF) on the year, UC Santa Barbara improves to 12-11 (1-4 MPSF) on the season.
The Pacific men's water polo team took the pool for a midday contest against the No. 9 Gauchos. UC Santa Barbara jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, notching six unanswered goals while holding the Pacific's offense scoreless.
The Gauchos began the second quarter, notching a goal at the 5:18 mark to take the 7-0 lead. Freshman Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) put Pacific on the board notching back-to-back goals at the 4:50 and 1:31 spots. UC Santa Barbara responded with 1:07 remaining in the half to make it an 8-2 contest. Sophomore Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) scored the Tigers third goal of the quarter to cut the Gaucho lead to five with 0:30 left in the half.
Leading 8-3 entering the third quarter, the Gauchos scored a goal with 6:59 left on the clock to gain the six point advantage. Tomasevic and sophomore Lance Morrison (Fairfield, Calif.) tallied back-to-back goals at the 5:19 and 0:42 spots to make it a 9-5 game to end the third.
In the fourth frame, UC Santa Barbara found the back of the cage to score its tenth goal of the contest with 7:29 remaining. Freshman Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary), junior Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.) and sophomore Tyler Reardon (Oak Park, Calif.) tallied three consecutive goals to put Pacific within two of UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos scored the final goal of the contest with 1:04 remaining to seal the victory as the Tigers were unable to complete the fourth quarter comeback.
Freshman Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) led the Tiger offense tallying three goals on the day. Senior David Andrus (Houston, Texas) recorded 3 saves in the cage during the first half for Pacific, while freshman Tomislav Bujas (Split, Croatia) recorded four in the second half. Pacific returns home Friday, Nov. 13, to host the visiting Aggies of UC Davis at 3:30 p.m. The Tigers then travel to Berkeley, Calif., Saturday, Nov. 14, to face California at 12 p.m.
