Malibu, Calif. - The No. 5 Pacific water polo team moved on to the fifth-place game of the 2015 Kap7 SoCal Classic with a 14-9 win over No. 7 UC Irvine Sunday morning. The Tigers will face No. 6 UC Santa Barbara at 2:40 p.m.
Pacific improves to 13-2 on the season. Kristian Laczkovics scored four times for the Tigers, while Aleksandar Petrovic and Ben Stevenson each scored three times. Alex Obert hit the back of the cage twice while Ikko Saito and Casey Fleming each also scored.
The Tigers opened up the scoring as Obert tallied 23 seconds into the game, after the Anteaters answered, Saito put Pacific back in front. UC Irvine responded but Petrovic gave the Tigers the lead for good with 2:01 left in the first. Fleming closed the first quarter for a 4-2 Pacific lead.
Pacific posted four second quarter goals to lead 8-4 at the break, as Laczkovics scored three times in the period.
In the third, Stevenson gave the Tigers a five-goal lead, and Laczkovics' fourth made it a 10-5 game. But the Anteaters picked up two goals before the end of the period.
UC Irvine drew within two at 10-8, just 46 seconds into the fourth, but the Tigers slammed the door as Petrovic converted and Obert restored a five-goal cushion. Stevenson added two more goals for a 14-8 lead before the Anteaters added a goal in the final seconds.
