PALO ALTO, Calif. - The men's water polo team clinched it's second win against UC Irvine on Friday night by a final score of 14-11. An Engin Ege Colak-led Tigers helped set the tone in Day One of the MPSF Invite scoring half of Pacific's goals with seven and helping lead a third period comeback victory over the Anteaters.
UOP improves to 7-5 overall on the season. UCI drops it's fourth straight contest moving to 5-8 on the year.
In Case You Missed It:
- Colak proved to be the Tiger of the night for Pacific. The junior attacker registered a career-mark with seven goals in the match, four of which came in the second period.
- UCI held a slim advantage for the first two quarters of play, their largest lead being by a margin of two. Pacific would fight back and grab the lead, 10-9, to end the third and not look back.
- Pacific would outscore the Anteaters 4-2 in the final frame helping them cruise their way to victory.
First Period:
- Luke Pavillard got the match going with the first goal of the night at the 5:55 mark.
- Luis Araya found his way on the board with under two minutes to go (2:44) knotting up the match at 2-2 a piece.
- UCI would end the period on a late goal for a one-point lead over the Tigers, 4-3.
Second Period:
- Ege Colak would match an early Anteaters goal with his first score of the match (5:47) off a powerplay to keep the margin at one.
- Colak went on to score three consecutive goals, including two in the final two minutes (1:58, 1:06) to help his team battle their way back and keep the Tigers right behind UCI.
- The Orange and Black headed into halftime trailing the Anteaters, 7-6.
Third Period:
- Colak kicked things off in the third with his fifth goal of the match (7:39). This knotted up the score at 7-all.
- Both teams would go back and forth, trading two goals a piece for the majority of the period which kept the match at bay (9-9) with just under a minute to play in the period.
- In the final seconds of the period, a UCI exclusion allowed Pavillard to punch in a goal on a powerplay drive (:06) and retake the lead.
- This gave UOP it's first lead since it's first goal of the match (5:55).
Fourth Period:
- Much like last week's contest against UCI, Pacific had a dominant fourth period outscoring the Anteaters 4-2 in the final frame.
- Three different Tigers scored a goal in the fourth (Araya, Colak, and Pavillard).
- Pavillard registered his ninth hat trick of the season after scoring two goals in the fourth and third minute.
- Colak and Pavillard would score the Tigers' final two goals of the match to take a three point lead. UOP would hold onto their advantage after that point to end the night.
Notables:
- 14 exclusions were called in the contest on Friday night.
- Pacific would have three four-point periods, the most pivotal coming in the final frame.
- Caleb Sandberg recorded his seventh goal of the season on Friday, finding the back of the net at a pivotal moment in the third (2:04) to tie the match up at 9-9. Sandberg's last goal came against UC Santa Barbara at the Aggie Classic (Sept. 15).
Up Next For the Tigers:
- The Tigers face a tough task tomorrow morning in top-ranked Stanford. The match is set for 12:00 PM at Avery Pool.
- The Cardinal are 11-0 on the season, taking a 19-8 win on Friday against No. 18 San Jose State.
- This will be the first time the two teams face each other for the year.
- The Tigers fell, 7-12, last season in their last match with the Cardinal. Araya, Colak, and Pavillard each chipped in one goal in that contest.
