Pacific Can't Find Footing in Finale at USD

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Looking for their first conference victory of the season, the Pacific baseball team (7-14, 0-6) was unable to salvage the series against San Diego (17-4, 5-1) on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Toreros, 5-1, in the finale at Fowler Park.

IN CASE YOU MISSED:
  • Beginning the scoring with a bang, senior outfielder Charles Middleton launched his second home run of the season in the top of the first to give Pacific the early 1-0 lead just three batters into the game. Unfortunately, this would be the only run the Tiger offense could produce in the contest.
  • Two innings later, the Toreros plated their first two runs of the contest on a double from shortstop Adam Lopez in the bottom of the third. Through three complete, USD held a 2-1 advantage.
  • Moving to the fifth, San Diego added three more runs on four hits as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead through five innings.
  • Unable to find the necessary momentum in their final opportunities at the plate, the Tigers could not convert with runners on base down the stretch, stranding seven total baserunners in the final four innings.
  • Defending their home field, the Toreros would go on to take down Pacific by a final score of 5-1 to push their win streak to five games and secure their third series sweep of the 2021 season.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Becoming a reliable presence on the mound, sophomore Grant Stevens tossed 2.1 innings with a game-high five strikeouts and no runs allowed on Sunday to record his fifth consecutive scoreless appearance.
  • At the dish, junior James Arakawa notched his eighth outing with at least two hits after finishing 2-for-4 with one walk.
  • Aiming to provide some rhythm for the Tiger offense, junior Jeremy Lea is now on a three-game hitting streak after singling into center field in the top of the second inning.

UP NEXT:
Pacific will continue their eight-game road stretch with another three-game conference series when they travel to Spokane to face the Gonzaga Bulldogs (13-10, 4-2) next weekend (Apr. 1-3). All three contests will be aired live on the WCC at game time as live statistics will also be available via pacifictigers.com.
