Bullpen Falters Late in Series Opener at UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Making the trip over to the Silver State following their win on Wednesday at Fresno State, the Pacific baseball team (8-18, 0-9) could not record back-to-back victories on Thursday afternoon, falling to the UNLV Rebels (12-7, 9-6), 8-4, at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Getting the Tigers on the board, senior Joe Fitzhugh plated classmate Alex LeForestier on a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the first to give Pacific the early 1-0 advantage.
  • With neither team making any noise in the second, UOP extended their lead to two in the third when LeForestier tripled home freshman Chaz Myers on a sharp ground ball down the first base line.
  • Finding his groove on the rubber to begin the contest, sophomore Grant Stevens recorded four strikeouts through four innings before senior Wyatt Hoffman drilled his first collegiate home run in the top of the fifth to push the score to 3-0 in favor of the Tigers.
  • Shortly thereafter, the Rebels responded with two runs on three hits in the home half of the fifth to trim their deficit to just one, 3-2.
  • Playing in the comfort of his hometown, Fitzhugh, a Las Vegas native, crushed his first home run of the season in the top of the sixth to double up UNLV again, 4-2, through six innings complete.
  • However, the Tiger bullpen unfortunately unraveled and relinquished the two-run lead in the seventh as the Rebels pushed across six runs on five hits and two errors from Pacific.
  • Although UOP got two baserunners on in the eighth, the Tigers could not find the timely hitting they needed down the stretch, as UNLV pitchers locked down in the final innings to secure the series opening victory by a final score of 8-4.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Remaining hot at the dish, LeForestier tallied his second straight three-hit performance by finishing 3-for-4 with one RBI on Thursday. Overall, the Sacramento native extended his reached base streak to 8 games.
  • Joining LeForestier, fellow infielder Thomas Gavello also pushed his reached base streak to 7 games respectively while extending his hitting streak to 4 games with a pinch hit single in the sixth inning.
  • Leading off for the Tigers, Myers recorded his second collegiate hit against the Rebels, going 1-for-4 with one run scored.
  • On the mound, Stevens tied his career-high with 6.0 innings pitched and 5 total strikeouts as the left hander was in line for the win upon exiting the contest.

UP NEXT:
