STOCKTON, Calif. – Returning home after their first conference series victory on the road at Santa Clara last weekend, the Pacific baseball team (15-28, 5-14) took down BYU (19-25, 11-11), 6-3, in the series opener between the two programs on Thursday night at Klein Family Field.
IN CASE YOU MISSED:
- Getting on the board in the top of the first, BYU plated two runs on two hits to open the contest as they held a 2-0 advantage after the first inning.
- With no action on either side in the second, the Cougars extended their lead to three on a solo home run from left fielder Hayden Leatham in the top of the third. However, the Tigers responded by trimming their deficit to two on an RBI single from senior Alex LeForestier in the bottom half of the inning, making the score 3-1.
- After another scoreless inning on both sides in the fourth, Pacific jumped on top for the first time in the home half of the fifth with three runs on three hits. In the inning, junior Ben Nemivant roped a two-run double that plated sophomore Thomas Gavello and senior Charles Middleton before senior Jeremy Lea laced an RBI single of his own that put the Tigers in front, 4-3.
- Following dominant performances out of the bullpen from senior Joe Solomon and junior Jackson Vaughan in the middle innings, Pacific added insurance to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, which was highlighted by a two-run double from Gavello that banged off the right center field wall.
- Coming on in relief to convert his third save of the season, junior Zach Patterson brung the heat in the top of the ninth against the Cougars, striking out the side in order to secure the game one victory for the Tigers by a final score of 6-3.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Already having recorded a thirteen game hitting streak earlier this year, junior James Arakawa extended his current streak to a season-long fourteen games with his single in the bottom of the third. Approaching double digits, Middleton also sits at eight straight games with a hit while Nemivant is at seven heading into Friday.
- Heating up at the plate, Gavello notched at least two hits for the seventh consecutive game after going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and one walk. Overall, it was also the fifteenth time the second year Tiger has tallied at least two hits in a contest.
- On the mound, Solomon registered his third straight scoreless appearance with 3.1 innings of relief against the Cougars, allowing just one hit along the way. Additionally, Vaughan logged his first appearance with no runs allowed since Apr. 28 against No. 18 Stanford. For Patterson, his three strikeouts in his 1.1 innings pitched also tied his season-high in punch outs.
- As a team, Thursday's victory over BYU marked Pacific's first win over the Cougars since a 6-5 win in Provo on May 19, 2018.
