MALIBU, Calif.— Pacific women's soccer (6-6-1, 0-2 WCC) played a hard-fought game but fell to Pepperdine (4-3-5, 1-1 WCC), 2-1, on Wednesday.
"Super unfortunate final score today," said co-head coach
Danesha Adams. "Our players not only competed hard but played some fantastic soccer through the entire 90 minutes. We dictated the rhythm and flow of the game."
The Waves took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on a goal from Julia Quinonez. In the 22nd minute, sophomore
Alexis Pashales stole the ball off a Pepperdine defender in transition and scored the equalizer from outside the box into the left side of the net to make it a 1-1 game.
The tie wouldn't last for long as a foul by senior
Laila Saravia resulted in a chance for a penalty for the Waves. Kendall Campbell shot the ball past senior goalkeeper
Juliana Alexander to extend Pepperdine's lead, 2-1. The score would stay the same throughout the contest.
Pacific had three chances to tie the game again in the second half, but the ball was stopped by the Waves. Two of those saves came from Pepperdine goalkeeper Taylor Rath.
The Tigers took 14 shots overall and six in net while the Waves had 16 and seven in between the pipes.
Pashales tallied her sixth goal and now has 14 points on the season. Alexander, who made her second career start and first appearance since her sophomore season, grabbed a career-high five saves.
"Never easy on the road, especially in the WCC," said co-head coach
J.J. Wozniak. "It was awesome to watch our players learn from the past few matches and implement an improved version of ourselves. We are hungry to get that first conference win and looking forward to getting back on the field Saturday at San Diego."
Up next, Pacific travels to take on San Diego at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
