Pacific Falls in High-Scoring Season Opener

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Pacific baseball team (0-1) started its season with a challenge, facing the Mountain West powerhouse UNLV (1-0). The Rebels scored early and often in the 14-6 win.

The Rebels scored four times in the bottom of the first inning off five singles and two Tiger errors. Freshman Rylan Evans got the Pacific offense going in the top of the second, recording his first collegiate hit on a double to left field. Fellow freshman Tony Otis brought him home with an RBI single to cut the lead to three. UNLV would add three more runs in the bottom of the inning on a single and a two-run home run.

Pacific would add another run in the top of the third with an RBI single to left field from freshman Peyton Miller, but despite the Tigers loading the bases, they could not bring home any more runs. UNLV added its eighth run in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to six.

A wild pitch brought home the Tigers' third run of the game as sophomore Owen McWilliam came home to score. The Rebels scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth on three hits and two stolen bases.

Pacific brought home its fourth run of the game in the fifth inning on another wild pitch as a Miller double, and Evans single put two runners into scoring position with no outs. After two strikeouts, things looked dire for the Tigers, but heads-up baserunning from Miller allowed him to score on a wild pitch.

Pacific scored again at the top of the seventh when Miller scored his second run of the game off an Evans RBI groundout. Junior Chase Graves would bring Pacific to its final total of six runs with an RBI groundout in the top of the ninth inning to score Evans.

Pacific and UNLV are back in action tomorrow at 1:05 p.m.
