Strong Start Not Enough for Tigers at San Diego

SAN DIEGO – In the last of a 15-match road stretch to begin the season, the Pacific volleyball program won the first set Thursday, but San Diego was able to come back for a 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-18) decision at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Tigers (10-5, 0-3 WCC) contained the Toreros (7-6, 2-1 WCC) early-on and held them to a .102 hitting percentage in the first set, but San Diego got hot and hit .367 in the second, .324 in the third and .258 in the fourth.

Graduate Alexa Edwards continued to pace Pacific's offense and registered a match-high 16 kills. It came after she entered the week ranked top-five in the nation in total kills with 239 and was the West Coast Conference leads in kills per set with 4.27. Edwards also led the team with 16 digs for her 10th double-double of the year.

Helping lead the attack was graduate Darina Kumanova with 11 kills. She submitted her third double-double of the season with 10 digs.

Four Tigers reached double-digits in digs. In addition to Edwards and Kumanova, junior Jayhlin Swain tallied 15 digs and sophomore Dylan Gilkey notched 11. Swain entered the night ranked second in the league in digs per set with 4.27.

Senior Jenna Heller distributed 35 assists.

The Tigers won the first set on a spike by Edwards. They built a 24-21 lead in the frame, and after San Diego inched close at 24-23, Pacific ended it on Edwards' sixth kill of the set.

Pacific will play its home opener Saturday when it hosts Santa Clara at noon at the Alex G. Spanos Center. The Tigers are 39-15 all-time against Santa Clara and have won the last four meetings.
