MORAGA, Calif. – The Pacific baseball team knocked in the game's first runs, but ultimately fell to Saint Mary's, 7-4, on Saturday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
The Tigers (10-40, 4-16 WCC) scored four runs on six hits and held an early lead, but the Gaels (32-16, 15-5 WCC) did their damage in the middle innings to secure the victory in game two of the series.
Sophomore
Kaden Petersen had a productive day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and a walk. Sophomore
Andre Vidal went 1-for-3 with an RBI single.
Junior
Jakob Guardado made the start on the mound for Pacific, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits while striking out three batters.
The Tigers struck first in the top of the second inning, stringing together three hits as part of the two-run rally to take a 2-0 lead.
The Gaels answered back in bottom of the second inning with a solo home run by Ryan Pierce to cut into the Tigers' lead, 2-1.
Pacific worked with a lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when Saint Mary's scored three runs to hold a 4-2 edge.
In the top of the sixth inning, some smart base running by Pedersen guided the Tigers to leveling the playing field at 4-4. Sophomore
Jake Tandy scored before that, marking Pacific's third run of the day with Vidal legging out a throwing error by the Gaels' shortstop.
The Gaels countered with a two-run sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to regain the lead, 6-4. Saint Mary's tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning, resulting in the final score of 7-4.
The Tigers return to action at 1 p.m. tomorrow to close out the series against the Gaels.
