Pacific Ousts Fresno State for Seventh Consecutive Win

FRESNO, Calif. – Rolling to its seventh straight victory, the Pacific volleyball program went on the road and knocked off Fresno State 3-1 (25-15, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22) Friday at Save Mart Arena.

The Tigers (8-2) got off to a fast start and grinded out the final two sets over the Bulldogs (3-6) to close it out. Pacific is on its longest winning-streak since 2015.

Graduate Alexa Edwards, the reigning West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week winner, registered her seventh double-double of the year with a match-high 20 kills and 14 digs. It was the fourth time she notched at least 20 kills in a match.

A double-double also came from graduate Darina Kumanova with 11 kills and a season-high 13 digs. Junior Emily Van Groningen was a big contributor with 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.

A whopping 51 assists came from senior Jenna Heller who also spiked six kills. The 51 assists were a season-high. Junior Jayhlin Swain anchored the back line with 25 digs, which matched her season-high.

Fresno State was guided by Ella Rud who finished with 19 kills and 11 digs.

Pacific raced out to a 9-4 lead in the first set after a kill by Van Groningen and increased it to 15-7 at the media timeout. The closest the Bulldogs came the rest of the way was 20-15, but the Tigers ended the set on a 5-0 run, capped by a kill from senior Abby Miller.

After dropping the second 25-19, Pacific found itself down 18-15 in the third when it came back to take a 21-20 edge on sophomore Dylan Gilkey's serve. Tied 22-22, a kill by Edwards put the Tigers up for good and the set ended on an ace by senior Megan Nishimura.

A back-and-forth fourth set was tied 19-19 when Heller dumped an attack and Edwards crushed a kill to go up 21-19. Kills by Heller and Van Groningen ended the match.

Pacific is now 35-3 all-time against Fresno State and have won the last five meetings. The Tigers improved to 13-3 all-time on the road at Fresno State.

Up next, the Tigers will face CSU Bakersfield at 3 p.m. Saturday. They'll conclude the weekend with a 12 p.m. Sunday match against Sacramento State.
