San Luis Obispo- The Pacific Tigers fell to the Cal Poly Mustangs 3-0 on Friday night. Game scores for the match were 30-27, 30-24, 30-28. The loss dropped the Tigers to 9-8 on the season and 3-2 in the Big West Conference. The Mustangs, meanwhile, moved to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
The Tigers played from behind throughout the match as Pacific trailed 22-18 in game one. The Tigers, however, fought back to tie the game at 24-24 by scoring six of the next eight points. Seniors Sidney Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) and Ashley Groothuis (Aurora, Neb.) had two kills each to pull Pacific even. Cal Poly, however, scored the next two points on a Pacific service error and a Tigers attack error. The Mustangs went on to take game one, 30-27.
Cal Poly took a 2-0 lead with a 30-24 win in game two as the Tigers committed 11 attack errors and five service errors.
The Tigers put forth their best effort in game three as Pacific had 21 kills in the third and final game. Unfortunately, the Mustangs proved equal to the challenge as Cal Poly swept the match with a 30-28 win.
The Tigers committed 31 attack errors and 13 service errors in the loss.
Groothuis led the Tigers with a match-high 20 kills. Two players reached double figures in kills for the Mustangs as Vanessa Gilliam had 16 kills and Kylie Atherstone had 13 kills.
The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 15 as Pacific takes on UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.
