Pacific Falls To Portland State, 3-1, In Community Bankers Classic Action

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific women's volleyball team (7-21) suffered a four-game loss to Portland State (20-7) in opening round action of the 28th Annual Community Bankers Classic on Friday, Nov. 24, at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Game scores for the match were: 14-30, 30-24, 30-27 and 30-26.

The Tigers opened the match with their best game of the season as the Tigers downed Portland State 30-14, behind a .571 hitting percentage. Pacific notched 17 kills and just one error on 28 swings in the first game, while Portland State tallied 12 kills and seven errors on 38 attempts for a .132 percentage.

Portland State, however, battled back in the final three games as the Vikings turned to senior Jessica Brodie and Jessica Frederick. The duo teamed for 55 kills in the match to pace Portland State to the 3-1 comeback victory. Brodie also notched 22 digs for the Vikings, while Frederick provided Portland State with a .341 hitting percentage.

After the Vikings evened the match at 1-1 with a 30-24 win in game two, the match turned on a series of points late in game three. Pacific held a 25-24 lead with freshman Kate Corbett (Chicago, Ill.) serving. Portland State turned to Brodie, who delivered a cross-court kill to tie the game at 25-25. Two Pacific errors followed, giving the Vikings a 27-25 edge. Following a Tiger timeout Brodie terminate two of the next three points to push Portland State's lead to 29-26. The Vikings went on to take game three 30-27.

Trailing 26-22 late in game four, the Tigers mounted a fierce rally behind junior Johanna Hilbers (Omaha, Neb.). Hilbers started the Tigers' run with a cross-court kill on the slide play to pull Pacific within three points. With Hilbers at the service line, the Tigers forced Portland State into two errors around a kill from freshman Meagan MimMack (Upland, Calif.) to tie game four at 26-26. The Vikings, however, once again got a lift from their seniors. Frederick and Brodie notched back-to-back kills to give Portland State a 28-26 lead. Two Pacific errors clinched the match for the Vikings, 30-26.

Hilbers and MimMack led the Tigers with 13 kills each, while sophomore Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished with 12 kills. Pacific junior Julie Magud (Stockton, Calif.) led the Tigers with 19 digs in the match.

In the other opening round match, Kristin Hasselberg pounded a match-high 17 kills to lead San Francisco (23-9) to a 30-18, 30-25, 30-23 sweep of Houston (19-16).

Houston will face Pacific in the consolation match at 5 p.m. Saturday evening, followed by San Francisco and Portland State in the championship match at 7 p.m.
