Sept. 10, 2006

Box Score

Tucson, Ariz. - Another dominating performance by the Tigers netted the Pacific women's soccer team their sixth consecutive shutout of the season, a 1-0 win over Gonzaga on Sunday, Sept. 10. The shutout sets a new program record for consecutive clean sheets passing the old mark of five set in 1999.

The win moved the Tigers to 5-0-1 on the season while the Bulldogs dropped to 3-2-1 overall.

From the opening whistle, the Tigers dominated the game and their opponents, controlling the tempo and the flow of the ball on both sides of the field. In the first half, Pacific's defense held Gonzaga to just two shots while its offense fired off 11.

The game-winner for the Tigers came in the 28th minute of the first half off of a set corner. From the set, junior Bunny Dickson (Millbrae, Calif.) fed a pass to the foot of sophomore Laura King (Livermore, Calif.) at the top left corner of the 18 yard box. From there, King teed up the ball and fired a shot off the back post and into the back of the net to put the Tigers up for good. The goal was her first of the season.

A one goal lead was all Pacific's defense would need, this time led by freshman Chelsea Gomes (Coto de Caza, Calif.). Gomes and the rest of the Tigers' defense continually shutdown the Bulldog's offense holding Gonzaga to eight total shots on the day and only two shots on goal.

Junior 'keeper Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) continued her excellent play in goal for the Tigers, running her unblemished streak to 576:58 minutes, a new program record. Souza was forced to make two saves on the day.

For the Bulldogs, Jessie Thalman produced eight saves on nine shots on goal while Taylor Hall led the team with four shots.

The Tigers put their unbeaten streak on the line against No. 18 BYU on Thursday, Sept. 14, as they play host to the Cougars at Stagg Memorial Stadium. The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
