Pacific Downs Yale in Four to Open Asics Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. - Junior Julie Magud (Stockton, Calif.) recorded a career-high 35 digs as the Pacific women's volleyball team opened Asics Invitational action with a four-game victory over Yale on Friday, Sept. 15, at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

With the win, Pacific moved to 2-9 on the season, while Yale dropped to 3-2 overall.

Game scores for the match were: 30-27, 30-20, 30-32, 30-24.

The first game of the match was a seesaw battle featuring 17 ties and eight lead changes. The final tie of the game came at 19-19 as the Tigers scored the next three points to take a 22-19 lead. Pacific senior Jennifer Knox (Macungie, Pa.) started the rally with one of her eight kills. The Tigers captured the next two points by forcing back-to-back errors by the Bulldogs. Pacific went on to take the first game, 30-27. Pacific junior Julie Magud (Stockton, Calif.) and freshman Meagan MimMack (Upland, Calif.) were vital to the Tigers' success in the opening game as Magud nabbed nine digs, while MimMack had five kills on seven swings without an error.

Pacific carried their momentum from the victory in game one into the second game as the Tigers never trailed in game two. Pacific opened the game with a kill from Knox, then sophomore Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) delivered a service ace. Sophomore Natalia Tomaszewska (Marklowice, Poland) stretched the lead to 3-0 with her fourth kill of the match. Moments later, Yale pulled even with Pacific at 5-5, but the Tigers responded with back-to-back kills from junior Johanna Hilbers (Omaha, Neb.) and Tomaszewska to take a 7-5 edge. Pacific held its slim margin through the middle of the game as the Tigers led 17-15 just after the media timeout. It was then that Pacific claimed control of game two with four straight points on two kills from Anderson and two Yale errors to take a 21-15 lead. Pacific went on to claim game two, 30-20. Tomaszewska led the way for Pacific in game two with six kills, while Magud nabbed 10 digs.

Both teams delivered their best hitting percentage of the match in game three but it was Yale that came out on top with a 32-30 win. Anderson and MimMack combined for 11 kills and just two errors in the third game alone. As a team the Tigers out hit Yale in game three, .362 to .340. Neither the Bulldogs, nor the Tigers held a lead larger than three points in the third game.

Pacific took the match with a 30-24 win in game four as Hilbers and Anderson delivered a combined nine kills on 19 swings, while committing just one error. The turning point of the final game came with the two teams tied at 22-22. A Yale service error gave Pacific a one-point lead. MimMack and freshman Masha Vaysburg (Livermore, Calif.) team for a thunderous block to push Pacific's lead to two points. The Tiger rally continued as Tomaszewska and Vaysburg delivered consecutive kills to make it a 26-22 game. The Tigers went on to claim the match, 30-24.

Four Tigers finished in double figures in kills, led by 16 kills from Hilbers and Anderson. Tomaszewska finished with a career-high 15 kills, while MimMack posted a career-high 14 kills.

Defensively, Magud's 35 digs lifted her into second place in Pacific history, falling four short of the Tigers all-time record for digs in a match. That record is held by Brooke Herrington (1985-88) as she had 39 digs against UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 30, 1988.

Pacific also notched two double-doubles as freshman setter Olivia Riley (Agua Dulce, Calif.) had 34 assists and 12 digs, while fellow freshman setter Dancyne Kama (Hilo, Hawaii) finished with 31 assists and 10 digs.

Yale's Alexis Crusey led all attackers with 23 kills.

In the first match of the Asics Invitational, held Friday morning, Montreal defeated Yale, 3-1. Game scores for that match were 23-30, 30-25, 30-14, 30-25.

The Tigers will meet Montreal on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Alex G. Spanos Center in the final match of the Asics Invitational. The match will prove to be the tournament championship as both teams enter the match at 1-0 in the three-team invitational.
