San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Pacific men's tennis team earned their fifth straight victory and retained their perfect record in Big West conference play on April 5, when they defeated Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif. by a score of 4-3. With the win, the Tigers improved their overall record to 9-7 on the season and improved to 3-0 in Big West action, while the Mustangs fell to 9-8 overall with the loss and to 1-1 in conference play.
In doubles action David Gonzalez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Pedro Toledo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) earned the Tigers only victory at the No. 3 position. Gonzalez and Toledo defeated Cal Poly's Blake Wardman and Drew Jacobs by a score of 8-7.
After conceding the doubles point of the match to the Mustangs, however, the Tigers then went on to win at the top four spots in singles play to earn the 4-3 victory and to retain their perfect record in conference play. Earning victories for the Tigers were Moritz Starke (Bamberg, Germany), Gonzalez, Renan Delsin (Santa Cruz da Conceiacao, Brazil), and Artem Gramma (Krivoj Rog, Ukraine).
Gramma clinched the win for the Tigers at the No. 4 spot after coming from behind to win his first set against Robert Foy 7-5. He then went on to win the tiebreak in the second set to clinch the Tigers' ninth win of the season. Starke won his match at the No. 1 position, while Gonzalez also won at the No. 2 spot and Delsin won at the No. 3 position.
The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow as they take on UC Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, Calif. at 12:00 p.m.
