Balanced Effort Leads Pacific To A 3-0 Sweep On The Road

Box Score

Fullerton, Calif. - Getting off on the right foot on their two game road trip, the Pacific women's volleyball team downed Cal State Fullerton in a three-game sweep on Friday, October 14.  The win pushed the Tigers to 13-7 overall and 4-3 in the Big West while the Titans fell to 8-10 overall and 3-3 in conference play.  The win also snapped a three match losing streak against Cal State Fullerton for the Tigers and was Pacific's thrid straight win in conference play.

Game scores for the match were: 26-24, 25-23, 25-19.

Continuing their recent run of play in the Big West, the Tigers made a trip to Southern California where they promptly dispatched the Titans for their first true road win of the 2011 season.  Working from behind early, the Tigers put together a complete and balanced effort to take out Cal State Fullerton and push themselves back into the race in the Big West.

Playing from behind in each of the three games, the Tigers made their biggest move of the night in the opening game when Pacific erased a six point midgame lead to take home the first game win.  Down 17-11 in game one, Pacific worked its way back into the game slowly, finishing off their comeback with a 5-0 run to take a 22-21 lead, its first lead since 2-1 early in the game.  In the game, Pacific worked the outsides with senior Samantha Misa and sophomore Megan Birch tallying 12 of the Tigers' 16 kills.

In game two, the Tigers spread their attack out firing from all angles while hitting .314 in the frame.  Pacific's balanced attack allowed the Tigers to push back from an early three point deficit while also holding back a late rally by the Titans.  After posting just two kills in game one, sophomore Jennifer Sander found her rhythm to lead Pacific's attack with five kills in just seven attacks.  Not far behind, junior Gabby Cowden tagged the Titans for four kills in just five swings as the Tigers' middles combined for nine kills in 12 attack without an error.

With the sweep in sight, Pacific turned its attention to the defensive side of the net as the Tigers combined to throw up five team blocks while holding the Titans to just .042 hitting.  Keying on the Titans' hitters througout the game, the Tigers were able to run away with the final game of the night to complete the three-game win over the Titans.

For the match, the Tigers were led by Misa as the senior posted a match-high 13 kills on 27 attacks to hit .370.  Adding 13 digs, Misa finished the night with her eighth double-double of the year while also adding two blocks.  Not to be outdone, junior Hannah Clancy orchestrated Pacific's attack with 40 assists while also adding 13 digs to pick up her 10th double-double of the year.  Birch added 11 kills to Pacific attack while Sanders finished her night with 10 kills and a .421 hitting percentage while also posting a team-high four blocks.  Cowden tallied seven kills and two blocks while also posting a match-high two aces.

On the other side of the net, Kayla Neto posted 13 kills on 35 attacks while also tallying 11 digs and four blocks defensively.  Bre Moreland added 12 kills, but hit .146, to finish as the lone other attacker to reach double-figures in kills.

Pacific will be back in action on Saturday, October 15, when the team travels Long Beach, Calif. to take on the Long Beach State 49ers.  The match is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
