Box Score Provo, Utah - Squaring off for the second and final time in 2015, the Tigers dropped a 3-0 decision to the No. 14 ranked BYU Cougars on the road on Saturday, Nov. 7 as the Cougars secured the season series with the win. The loss for the Tigers marked their third-straight sweep in conference play as Pacific fell to 5-9 in the WCC and 14-11 overall while the Cougars kept pace at the top of the standings by improving to 11-2 in conference play and 21-3 overall.
Set scores for the match were: 25-18, 25-23, 25-17.
A slow start to the opening set proved to be too much for the Tigers to overcome as BYU used an impenetrable defense to build a 10-point lead at 20-10 before a late rally by Pacific closed the final gap. Early on, every Tiger attack seemingly found a Cougar defender led by Ciara Parker, who would end the day with 14 digs, as BYU kept the Tigers from terminating points allowing the Cougars to build their lead. Pacific would cut the deficit in half at 23-18 behind a pair of blocks and a handful of kills, but an unforced error stopped the rally and gave the Cougars the opportunity to close out the set on the seventh kill of the contest by Alexa Gray.
Using the momentum from their late rally in set two, the Tigers came out firing offensively as sophomore Maycie LaBass and junior Lexi Elman began to find their way at the pins against the Cougars' defense. After tying the set at 17-17 for the first time in the frame, the two teams traded points until a pair of kills from Gray and a mental mistake by the Tigers allowed BYU to grab a 23-20 lead. With the three-point cushion in hand, the Cougars once again closed out the Tigers with kills from Amy Boswell in the middle that bookended the sixth kill of the set for Elman. In all, Elman and LaBass came up with 14 of the Tigers' 16 kills in the set, but could not overcome the efforts of the Cougars on the other side of the net.
Just as they had done in the first two sets of the day, the Tigers fell behind early before mounting a comeback late only to fall short. Calling a timeout almost immediately into the set after a pair of mistakes gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead, the Tigers settled in to keep pace with BYU. However, the damage was already done as the Tigers could not contain Gray, who willed the Cougars to the set victory as BYU pulled away to secure the match. Fittingly, Gray finished off the match with her 20th kill of the day to halt any comeback hopes by Pacific.
In the end, Gray finished her day with 20 kills on .366 hitting to go with 12 digs and a team-best five blocks. Boswell joined the 2014 WCC Player of the Year with 12 kills as she hit .526 to lead way. Boswell added four blocks as the Cougars finished the match with 11.0 team blocks.
For Pacific, LaBass would finish the match with a team-best 11 kills on .273 hitting but was held to just two kills in the third set after posting eight in the second set alone. Elman came up with 11 kills to match LaBass as the junior ace also added six digs and two blocks.. In the middle, junior Alicja Wilk tallied seven kills and posted a match-best six blocks as the Tigers hung with the Cougars' block to post 9.0 team blocks.
The Tigers have play just one match next week when they travel to Moraga, Calif. to take on their travel partner, Saint Mary's, at McKeon Pavilion. The match is scheduled for 5:30 pm on Friday, Nov. 13.
