No. 70 Men's Tennis Knocks Off No. 27 UCSB

Santa Barbara, Calif. -  The No. 70 Pacific men's tennis team stormed back to defeat No. 27 UC Santa Barbara, 4-3, Saturday as Pacific won four singles matches.

The Gauchos won the doubles point, as No. 38 Nathan Eshmade and Miles Seemann posted a 6-1 win over No. 40 Sem Verbeek and Jose Chamba.

Morgan Mays and Andrew Riminton downed Bernardo Oliveira and Lance Ngo, 6-4, while Daniel Alameh and Alex Giannini saw their match with Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Anders Holm went unfinished.

In singles play, Teague Hamilton topped Bernardo Oliveira, 6-1, 6-2, at sixth singles as the Gauchos took a 2-0 lead.

At first singles, Verbeek answered back with 6-0, 6-3, win over Nathan Eshmade. Alameh downed Moreno de Alboran, 6-4, 6-2, at second singles, evening the match at 2-2.

UCSB returned to the lead as Anders Holm finished a 6-4, 6-4, win over Giannini at fourth singles. But Miguel Diaz  fended off Morgan Mays,  6-2, 7-5, at third singles as the Tigers tied the match.

Jose Chamba wrapped up the win by outlasting Cody Rakela, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

The Tigers improve to 6-4 on the season, and win their second against a Top 50 opponent this season.

"Today, the Tigers really made the University of the Pacific proud by defeating the No. 27 team in the country," head coach Ryan Redondo said. "The match started off fairly poorly in the doubles.  We were in many positions to win the doubles matches but for some reason or another backed off.  Sem and Jose had tons of opportunities and didn't take them and UCSB played really well.  After losing the doubles point the guys really shifted their focus and a definite sense of focus and calmness was displayed, which got us the win.  Jose clinched the match at No. 5, 7-5 in the third after some very mature and disciplined tennis from Sem, Daniel, and Miguel.  A team victory all around.  UCSB has a great crowd and it was a lot of fun to watch the guys compete.  Never content and lots to improve."
