Box Score Sacramento, Calif. – The Pacific women's soccer team drew a 1-1 tie with the Sacramento State Hornets Sunday afternoon, bringing them to a 0-5-1 record. Junior Lily Higashino netted her first goal of the season, and goalie Lena Perry continued her strong 2016 season with an eight save performance.
"It was a hard-fought 110 minutes," said head coach Kerri Scroope. "We got on the board first and had some great opportunities, but just couldn't capitalize on them."
The Tigers got their first lead of the season in the 24th minute of play when midfielder Lily Higashino got one past the Hornet 'keeper. Mati Long dished a pass to Higashino, who broke from the right of the box and sent the ball to the corner for the score. The Tigers were able to hold the 1-0 lead going into the intermission, despite Sacramento State taking eight shots in the first 45 minutes.
Eleven minutes into the second half the Hornets answered with a goal of their own to knot the score at one apiece. The offensive chances kept coming for the Tigers as they took five corners in the second half to try and pull ahead once more, but the Hornet defense shut them down and they headed to overtime.
The back-and-forth continued in extra time, with both teams looking to break the tie. The Pacific defense did well in stopping the seven shots the Hornets registered, however offensively the Tigers failed to created much opportunity and the game ended in a tie.
After surrendering seven goals in the past two games coach Scroope was pleased with the way the defense bounced back.
"Our defense played a good game and kept their chances far out," continues Scroope. "We take today as a step in the right direction."
Pacific continues their road trip with one more game against UC Davis next Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 PM.
