BERKELEY, Calif. – Ran Amar won the singles main draw at the ITA Northwest Regional Championship. Six Pacific men's tennis athletes competed in the event hosted by California.
Amar highlighted the weekend for the Tigers, winning five straight matches to take home the regional championship, defeating UC Davis's Ryan Torres 6-2, 6-1 to take the title and qualify for the super-regional October 21-23 at Stanford. Terance Das had previously qualified for the super-regional and will join Amar in Palo Alto.
"I have to note a special recognition to our captain,
Ran Amar, who took home the title this week," said Head Coach Robin Goodman. "Winning a tournament at this level is incredibly physically, and mentally challenging. He continues to impress me with his consistent hard work and his tenacious competitive spirit in the face of adversity. He is a special young man who has a bright future ahead of him. This is only the beginning of many successes for Ran and this dedicated Pacific team."
Micah Erwin,
Andre Rodeia,
Manroop Saini,
Peter Alam and
Coby McCaig joined Amar at the event and competed in both singles and doubles competition.
Alam won his first match (6-1, 6-1) before falling in round two. Saini also won his first round (7-5, 6-4) but lost in round two. Rodeia received a bye in the first round and won his round of 32 matchup to make it into the round of 16, where he was defeated (2-6, 6-3, 6-2).
