STOCKTON, Calif. – After completing 14 straight road matches to begin the season, the Pacific volleyball team returns home to the Alex G. Spanos Center for the first time, as the team faces off against Santa Clara on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
The Tigers (9-5, 1-1), coming off the first week of West Coast Conference action, took care of business against Gonzaga in the conference opener before falling to Portland in five sets over the weekend.
Biamba Kabengele had a solid week offensively, tallying a combined 31 kills, including a career-high 21 in the win over the Bulldogs last Thursday. In the first two conference matches of the season, Kabengele recorded back-to-back double-doubles as the senior from Burlington, Ontario, had 10 kills and 10 digs against Portland.
Alexa Edwards continues leading the team in multiple offensive statistical categories, including kills, kills per set, and total points. Along with leading the team in kills with 219, Edwards ranks first in the conference and is 22nd nationally in that category. The junior from Sacramento, Calif., tallied 35 kills in the first two conference matches last week, recording her fifth double-double of the season with 21 kills and 11 digs against the Pilots.
Santa Clara enters Tuesday's match with a 5-8 record while earning its first conference win of the season, a 3-0 sweep of San Francisco on Friday, Sept. 23. Julia Sangiacomo has emerged as the Bronco's main offensive weapon, leading the team and ranking second in the conference with 205 kills. The junior outside hitter also ranks first in the conference in kills per set by a wide margin, tallying a ratio of 4.56.
The Tigers hold a 35-14 advantage over the Broncos since the first meeting in the 1975 season, including a solid 19-5 record in Stockton. The Broncos, however, have seen recent success, earning wins over the Tigers in three of the last four meetings. Last season, the Tigers dropped both matches to the Broncos, falling 3-1 on the road, before dropping the season's final match, 3-1, at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
